The Plains Angels are a group of Midwest angel investors dedicated to providing outstanding financial returns to accredited angel investors while assisting early-stage growth companies by being an excellent source of funding and advice. We accomplish our objectives by providing a platform for our members to view and exchange information about investment opportunities in high potential, early-stage and emerging growth companies.   Our members collaborate on due diligence but make individual investment decisions.

Based in Des Moines, the group meets on second Monday of each month to evaluate investment opportunities. Entrepreneurs may apply at http://www.plainsangels.com.

1 Million Cups

1 Million Cups is a Kauffman Labs program with a goal to engage and energize startups by building community through a weekly educational program.

Each week, the 1MC program offers two local upstarts an opportunity to present their companies to a diverse audience of mentors, advisors, and entrepreneurs.

We meet every Wednesday at 9:00am at Green Grounds Cafe in Valley Junction.goo.gl/maps/J2dML

Each startup is given 6 minutes to highlight their company followed by 20 minutes of Q&A with the group.

Founded in July 2008, Silicon Prairie News exists to highlight and support the burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem on the Silicon Prairie. With five full-time employees and nearly a dozen contributors, they have individuals on the ground in and around Omaha, Des Moines and Kansas City. SPN launched coverage of the Des Moines startup community in 2009 and continues to be the source for information about startup activity and culture across Iowa and the region.

Dream Big Grow Here is an online entrepreneur contest featuring $1,000 monthly grants awarded online to emerging and existing Iowa small business owners was developed through a partnership with the Iowa Bankers Association, the Community Vitality Center, and the University of Northern Iowa Regional Business Center (RBC) in mid-2010.

Dream Big Grow Here has since attracted 63,489 visitors during the five month beta test. Given the initial success of Dream Big Grow Here, a group of statewide sponsors stepped up in 2011 to provide matching funds for more customized regional contests-with bigger cash awards of $5,000- and to fund a statewide pitch-off among winners for a grand prize of $10,000. The Iowa Bankers Association, The Technology Association of Iowa, Renew Rural Iowa, Iowa Department of Economic Development, Iowa Area Development Group, and the Community Vitality Center made up the 2011 team.
